KERRVILLE, TX: The Schreiner University Women's Basketball team won their game against Howard Payne University this afternoon 86-80.
The Mountaineers decided that they weren't done eating after the Thanksgiving holiday and came in today hungry for more buckets. As they served as hosts of the Thanksgiving Classic held on the campus of Schreiner University, the Mountaineers put up a major fight in the fourth quarter and ended up walking away with the close win.
It was a relatively even game throughout the first three quarters, with neither team able to pull away with the lead. Schreiner entered the fourth quarter with a 2 point lead, but that would prove to not be enough as Howard Payne came storming back, even taking a 3 point lead of their own with just three minutes left to play. However, the Mountaineers once again showed their toughness by holding strong on the offensive glass and securing a huge late game offensive rebound that set up Nariyah Buggs for a wide open game tying lay up. Still not done fighting, Schreiner then forced another turnover on Howard Payne with a steal by Buggs followed by a pull up jump shot that gave Schreiner the lead.
That was not the end for Howard Payne though as they responded with a fast break lay up of their own, tying the game at 77-77 with just over one minute left to play. At that point, it became a game of made and missed free throws. Howard Payne went on to miss a couple of game tying free throws, and the Mountaineers went on to make all of their's, ultimately putting the game away 86-80.
Leading the way for Schreiner was freshman Demauria Miles who finished with 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. Also contributing was Nariyah Buggs (15 PTS, 3 AST, 3 STL), Zay Pirtle (13 PTS), Nylah Raines (10 PTS, 6 REB, 3 STL), Josline Hernandez (10 PTS), and Gabby Ivarra (6 PTS, 6 AST, 13 REB). It was a final box score full of contributions from all over the roster.
This was a big time win for the Mountaineers who had struggled as of late, but will look to get back on track now as they ride this momentum into their game tomorrow against Sul Ross State University.
