Hannah Ortiz Named SCAC Woman of the Year Finalist

KERRVILLE, TX: Schreiner University 2020 graduate, Hannah Ortiz, has been named one of seven finalists for Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Woman of the Year award as announced by the conference on Tuesday, July 7th.

The award recognizes the conference's senior female student-athlete who has best distinguished herself throughout her collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence and service and leadership. Past Winners

Member schools were permitted to submit two nominations if at least one of the nominees was a woman of color or international student-athlete.

This year's finalists include: Ann Savage of Austin College, Kyra Montes of Centenary College, Riley Wadehra of Colorado College, Hannah Ortiz of Schreiner University, Mary Cardone of Southwestern University, DeAnna Hernandez of Texas Lutheran University and Abby Holland of Trinity University.

To be nominated, student-athletes must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in her primary sport by the end of the 2020 spring season, received her undergraduate degree prior to the conclusion of the summer 2020 term and had a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.500 (4.000 scale).

Hannah Ortiz graduated with a 3.87 GPA has a Chemistry major and was a three-time SCAC Academic Honor Roll Honoree (2018-20). At the 2019 SCAC Softball Championships, Ortiz was named the SCAC Softball Elite 19 Award winner, along with being named Honorable Mention All-SCAC to go with her 2018 Second Team All-SCAC recognition. 

Throughout her years at Schreiner, Ortiz was volunteer at the Croc Center as a Youth Softball coach, volunteered for Blue Santa, the VA Hospital, Rise Against Hunger and the Schreiner STEM Zone Trunk or Treat. 

Ortiz and the softball team were 8-10 this year before the COVID-10 pandemic ended their season. In her final year, Ortiz nearly doubled her K/7 to 6.06, had an ERA of 3.23, and was 3-3 with 34.2 innings pitched earning her being named Schreiner University Female Student-Athlete of the Year.
