KERRVILLE, TX: The Schreiner University Men's Basketball team defeated the University of St. Thomas in the Semifinal round of the SCAC Men's Basketball Championship 65-64.
The Mountaineers were in San Antonio, Texas, for the Semifinal round of the SCAC Men's Basketball Championship as they took on the #1 Celts from the University of St. Thomas.
The underdogs did it again! The Mountaineers (#5 Seed) pulled off the shocker of the tournament as they knocked out the undefeated Celts (#1 Seed) on Saturday night and are now advancing to the final round of the SCAC Men's Basketball Championship.
Graduate senior, Alex Dehoyos, played one of his best games of the season and pushed the Mountaineers to the finals with a 17 point scoring performance on 7-10 shooting from the field. Also with a great offensive display was sophomore point guard, Beau Cervantes, who finished with 14 points, and sophomore big man, Kamden Ross, who finished with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.
The game would come down to the wire as a jump shot by Dehoyos would put Schreiner up 1 point with under 2 minutes to play. Then, Dylan Mackey (10 pts) would score two more to put the Mountaineers up 3 points with 58 seconds left.
In dramatic fashion, the Celts would have possesion for the final shot of the game, but their 3-point shot attempt would miss and the follow up offensive put back wouldn't be enough to tie the game, as the contest came to a conclusion with a final score of 65-64 in favor of the Mountaineers, handing the University of St. Thomas (the #12 ranked team in the nation) their first loss to a SCAC opponent this season.
With this upset win over the University of St. Thomas, the Mountaineers will now head to the final round of the SCAC Men's Basketball Championship where they will meet the Trinity University Tigers (#2 Seed) on their home court for a chance to claim the 2023 SCAC Men's Basketball Championship trophy and an automatic bid into the NCAA DIII Tournament.
