Men's Soccer Defeats Southwest. Assemblies of God Univ. 2-1

KERRVILLE, TX: The Schreiner University Men's Soccer team defeated Southwestern Assemblies of God University this evening 2-1 in their home opener.

It was a great day out in Kerrville, Texas, as the Mountaineers took down Southwestern Assemblies of God University 2-1 in their home opener. Strong play all around by Schreiner kept the match close throughout the first half, with neither team able to put a point on the board. However, as the second half got underway, it was junior Forward, Zaaron Gonzalez, who broke free and put a beauty of a shot in the back of the net for the Mountaineers to take a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, that lead didn't hold as the SAGU Lions quickly bounced back with a goal of their own shortly after. Then, after a close back and forth second half wound down, senior Midfielder, Frankie Menchaca, Pulled off a miracle goal for the Mountaineers in the 83rd minute that would end up being the match winner.

On the defensive side of the ball, it was sophomore Goalkeeper Kameryn Roehrig, who put on a fantastic performance. Roehrig played a full 90 minutes and finished with 8 saves on 9 total shots on goal.

Up next, the Mountaineers will remain at home as they take on Texas A&M University-San Antonio on September 9th, at 1:00 PM.
