Wodtke Perfection, Strong Offense Lead to Sweep of Roos 15-9, 12-0

SHERMAN, TX: Sophomore Bri Wodtke threw a perfect game in the series finale against Austin College on Saturday afternoon to highlight a SCAC sweep for the softball team.

After giving up nine runs in the bottom of the first inning of the second game of the series, the Mountaineer bats came alive to score 15 runs off 19 hits. With the game tied 9-9 in bottom of the 4th innging, senior Hannah Ortiz came in to pitch the final four innings not giving up a hit and striking out six batters. The 5th innings saw three homeruns for the Mountaineers with sophomore Mackenzie Oltmann hitting the go ahead solo homerun, followed by a solo homerun from junior Courtney Bigley two batters later. Then sophomore Melanie Castilla added a base hit to right field to allow Hannah Ortiz to hit her first career homerun. Ortiz, again, hit another two run homerun in the top of the 7th inning to finish the game 2-2 and 4 RBI. Bri Wodtke led the team with 3 hits while Malorie Solis, Taci Tatum, Bigley, Ortiz, Annie Wallace, and Marisa Hernandez each had two hits in the game.

In the final game of the series, Bri Wodtke pitched her first career perfect game facing 15 batters and striking out 8 over 5 innings. Wodtke started the game striking out the side in the inning and having at least one strike out in four out of the five innings. A strong second inning produced nine runs for the Mountaineers behind a two run homerun from Taci Tatum that scored Bigley. Wodtke again led the team with 3 hits going 3-4, while Solis, Oltmann and Tatum had two hits.
