Baseball Splits Double-Header with Howard Payne on the Road

BROWNWOOD, TX: The Mountaineers traveled to Brownwood, Texas for a non-conference double-header against Howard Payne University. Schreiner won the first game 12-11, before falling 2-9 to the Yellow Jackets in the second game.

GAME ONE: The Mountaineers started the first game with a two-run lead in the top half of the first inning, HPU answered with a single run in the bottom half. The Yellow Jackets had a strong performance in the second inning by scoring eight runs. Schreiner responded with a single run in the fourth before scoring their own eight runs in the fifth. The Mountaineers tacked on one more run to earn a 12-11 victory over the Yellow Jackets. Allen, Garcia, Bippert, Garza, and Hill all pitched in the game. Rey Garza picked up his 1st collegiate win in the game. Gilliam, Williams, and Benavides each contributed three hit performances of the 15 hit offensive showcase.

GAME TWO: Schreiner also was the first to score in game two after earning a run in the second. HPU had another strong inning when they put together nine runs in the third inning. The Mountaineers earned one more run before falling to the Yellow Jackets 2-9. Whitley, Skinner, Converse, Hakala, and Hooper all pitched in the game. Together, Garrett Whitley and Devin Hooper contributed three scoreless innings. Gilliam added another multi-hit performance in the second-game of the double-header.

UP NEXT: The Mountaineers will travel to Austin, Texas for a non-conference series on Saturday at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM and Sunday at 1:00 PM against the Concordia Tornados.
