Schreiner Athletics Recognizes Women's Golf Seniors

KERRVILLE, TX: With the season for our spring sports coming to end earlier than expected, Schreiner Athletics wanted to recognize the seniors for each of these sports.

A statement from Director of Athletics Bill Raleigh:

"As all of us deal with this unprecedented Coronavirus pandemic, Schreiner Athletics wanted to recognize the Seniors from our Spring Sports. All these athletes handled themselves with grace and dignity as the announcement came down to originally suspend then cancel the remainder of the Spring Season.  They have been great representatives of Schreiner University and the athletic program. We are very proud of these fine student-athletes and wish them the best as they graduate and head out to conquer their next challenge.

Thank you for all your hard work!"

We continue our senior recognitions with honoring Women's Golf seniors, Reygan Rodriguez and Katelyn Smith. Here is what Head Coach Alan Baxter had to say about his two seniors:

Reygan Rodriguez | Odessa, TX

Katelyn Smith | Missouri City, TX

"The women's team this year was starting to surprise some folks on the course. They started to jell. This was a total team effort and the women pushed each other both on the course and off the course. As a coach, I am super proud of all the young women on the team. They did what we set out to do and that was to win what we could controlThe team was always professional, the most courteous, the most respectful, had the comradery that had people envious, were great teammates, had the most fun, and they succeeded in the classroom. All those are these things we can control. On the course, we had flashes of really surprising some folks as we were not picked to be a favorite. I believe we would have done very well at Conference. We were on the verge of going to Las Vegas for a huge tournament along with some extra practice sessions out there when our season came to a halt.

We are a true team at Schreiner, but since this is about the seniors, we will discuss these two special ladies, Reygan Rodriguez and Katelyn Smith.  It was truly an honor to coach these young ladies. They never let me, themselves, their teammates or their families down. They were just incredible. Every player had a role. The two seniors stepped up in a big way. Both Reygan and Katelyn excel in the classroom. Reygan was picked as the captain and she took this role seriously. She led the team - to win what we could control. On the course, she developed into one of the top golfers in the whole conference.  Reygan's focus and competitiveness set her apart. She was a true winner. Katelyn also stepped up in a huge way. She has passion and it exudes into everything she does. She was the smiling assassin. Sometimes at practice, I was in awe on how she focused and worked. Together these two seniors were a great one two punch. They deserve the best in life as they are just incredible to be around. Kudos to their parents. They both will be super successful in life. They never complained and helped each other. They represented themselves, the University and their families with honor. Words cannot describe how hurt I was when I had to relay that the season was over. They understood and took it like they always do – they braved a smile and stayed positive"
