Softball Opens Season With Road Wins Against HSU and Millsaps

ABILENE, TX: The Mountaineers opened their season with two wins on day one the Abilene Round Robin Tournament. Schreiner defeated Hardin-Simmons in five innings 11-1 before ending the day with a 9-1 win against Millsaps. The team will face McMurry at 11:00 AM and Hardin-Simmons at 2:00 PM on Saturday.

SCORING vs HARDIN-SIMMONS: Freshman pitcher, Kennedy Moody earned her first win of her collegiate career after only allowing three hits and one earned run. Returners, Ashton Vasquez, Alyssa Maki, Rachel Brown, and Gabriella Acuna all scored multiple times for the Mountaineers, with two, three, two, and four runs respectively. Hardin-Simmons scored their only run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

SCORING vs MILLSAPS: Junior pitcher, Hannah Ortiz earned her first win of the season after only allowing five hits, one earned run and having five strikeouts. Brisa Perez earned a run for the Mountaineers and teammates Ashton Vasquez (1), Alyssa Maki (1), Rachel Brown (2) and Gabriella Acuna (2) all scored in both games. Freshmen, Melanie Castilla and Bailey Stoker earned the first runs of their collegiate careers.

SCORING: Schreiner is now 2-0 this season. 

UP NEXT: The Mountaineers will begin day two of the Abilene Round Robin Softball Tournament on Saturday with McMurry at 11:00 AM before finishing the trip with Hardin-Simmons at 2:00 PM.
