Baseball Opens Conference Play at University of St. Thomas

KERRVILLE, TX: The Schreiner University Baseball team opened up their SCAC play with a three game road series at the University of St. Thomas.

The Mountaineers came out stong to open the series as they picked up a 3-2 win over the Celts. However, momentum would shift over to the University of St. Thomas as they won the following two games 16-2 and 8-7.

GAME 1 (SCH 3 - UST 2)

It was a close game to open up the series as the Mountaineers went down by two runs early, but answered with three runs runs of their own to take the lead back and win the game 3-2. It was a clutch hitting display by junior, Adam Sanchez, as his two RBI single in the top of the 6th inning tied the game up. Also with a clutch hitting display was senior, Chance Goins, who gave Schreiner the lead with an RBI hit in the top of the 8th inning.

On the mound, it was reliever, Luke Rodgers who came in to pitch in the 7th inning to steady the ship and picked up his 4th win of the season. Closing out the game was senior, Daniel Garza, who pitched the final 1.2 innings and recorded his 1st save of the season.

GAME 2 (SCH 2 - UST 16)

The second game of the series played out much differently for Schreiner, as the Celts' bats came out firing and ultimately forced a run rule to take place, bringing the game to a conclusion in just 7 innings. On the mound, it was a committee of pitches who had their opportunities for Schreiner, but ultimately it would be starting picher, Fito Mendez, who would be credited with the loss, moving his season record to 1-3.

GAME 3 (SCH 7 - UST 8)

The third and final game of the series was another close battle with both sides putting up a strong fight. However, in the end it would be the Celts who came away with the victory. The Mountaineers put up runs in all but three innings, but a 5 run inning by the University of St. Thomas in the bottom of the 5th would ultimately be the difference maker. The high scoring outing was highlighted by Home Runs by juniors, Josh Fowler and Joseph DiCarlo.

On the mound, it was senior, Devin Hooper, who would be credited with the loss, moving his season record to 2-3.
